8 July, 2019

One of the best anchors and TV presenters in the country, Kavea R Chavali is an inspiration to many. She is amongst the top female anchors in the country. Having anchored over 1000 shows across the world in a matter of just a few years, the beautiful lady talks about her journey so far, the challenges of her job and lots more in an interview with Deepa Natarajan.   BV: Did you always want to be a presenter? What drew you towards it? Kavea: Secretly yes! As a kid, I had this peculiar habit of holding the newspaper in front of me and treating it like a teleprompter. I would also record my video sessions and see how I sounded. But then after I completed my engineering and started working in an MNC, I realized that I need to turn my desire into reality. So I took the risk and plunged into mainstream media. I was attracted towards anything that involved travel, communication, and people. What drew me towards it was the supreme impact of an individual's voice. BV: You are a model and an actor too. How do you wear multiple hats with ease? Kavea:  I think that ease comes with the fact that I am naturally expressive. As a trained dancer for 15 years, I have always loved the mic and the camera. So be it photoshoots or acting, it just becomes an extension of my expressive side. Kavea R Chavali, Bananivista BV: Your job is glamorous but what are the biggest challenges of it? Kavea: Yes it's always glamorous for the others because they only see the final output. What many people don't see is the irregular travel and sleep hours, food patterns or for that matter, the preparation one needs to do to handle both a technical or an entertaining event. There is a lot of reading material I go through to keep myself up to date with everything. Another big challenge I face is that I don’t report to anyone or have a boss above me to keep giving me work. So even if you are the most successful model/anchor, you still have to stay relevant at all times to stay in the game. BV: You have been across the globe for your shows. Which was the most memorable place to visit? Kavea: It's these travels that keep me happy. I have been to three different cities in one day thanks to my shows. Among the international shows that I have done, I loved both Cape Town and Istanbul. I enjoyed the beautiful roads and lifestyle of Cape Town while in Istanbul, it’s the Asian-European culture and food that caught my attention.   BV:  Is there any place that you would love to go to? Kavea: I would love to visit Peru and Seychelles . Both these places have a very distinct flavour and my craving for both mountains and beaches will be fulfilled by going to these places. I am a big foodie too. So I can't wait to try out some delicious dishes at these places. Kavea R Chavali, Bananivista BV: Who are your inspirations? Kavea: Undoubtedly Shereen Bhan, the Managing Editor of CNBC TV18. I have been watching her on TV for the last 15 years and have always been in awe of her personality. She is the perfect amalgamation of beauty and intelligence.   BV: What do you do in your free time? Kavea: I am also an entrepreneur and run a brand called KALANECA where we connect with the weavers of Uppada in Andhra Pradesh and design handwoven silk sarees. This brainchild of my mom, sister Ramya and me keeps us extremely occupied as it's a thriving business on its own. So my free time goes away in work too. But I love to work out, go for a swim, travel or just watch Netflix/Amazon Prime.   BV: What's your advice to budding anchors and presenters?  Kavea: This field has become more professional and organized over the years thanks to many of us stepping up and creating a path for the youngsters. I mentor young anchors and one thing I tell them is not to be in this business only for the spotlight. The fame and accolades will follow but first, be passionate and find the right reason to be an anchor. If you love to wear great clothes and walk on stage then don’t be an anchor, be a model instead. An anchor is the voice that drives the discussion. He or she is not just a mediator or an interface between the programme and the audience but someone who drives home the purpose of the event. BV: Give us a few simple style tips that you follow.     Kavea: 1)Do not go overboard with colours and prints. Match a plain colour with pattern. If your skirt has colourful prints then go for a plain subtle shirt/top. If your saree is full zardozi with a lot of design, go for a subtle blouse and simple earrings. 2) Your eye make-up and lipstick should never be bold at the same time. Highlight either one at a time. 3) As an anchor, I always ask for the backdrop/background colour of the stage. That way I can decide my costume colour and not be a chameleon!! 4) Get your nails done well. While holding the mic, your nails are easily captured by the audience and the photographers.
