BV: What inspired you to be a psychologist? Do you always want to be one?
Jaseena Backer: I had never wanted to be a psychologist. It so happened that a lot of friends who spoke to me found relief and solace talking to me. They kept coming back for more talk therapy. Then I decided to take it as a profession because I realized people related to me.
BV: What are the challenges this profession comes with and how did you overcome them?
Jaseena Backer: Mental health is still not an accepted priority in India. There exists a stigma to visit a psychologist. I do a lot of write-ups to create awareness of the importance of remaining mentally healthy. I take phone counseling for those who have a stigma.

BV: Since you deal with mental health, what are some of the major issues that you have seen among the youngsters? And how have you been successful in resolving those cases?
Jaseena Backer: Children are being victims of helicopter parenting with over-involvement of parents and not receiving the right freedom to function as an independent. Some parents are overly liberal with children and not giving them a good and bad experience. A balance of freedom and rules are essential
BV: Do you use any kind of therapies while consulting your patients? If yes, would you please throw some light on it.
Jaseena Backer: I do talk therapy, what people need the most. They want to be heard, without questioning them, without being judgemental about. Once they feel heard they are willing to listen to a third party intervention and even look at a new perspective.
BV: During this COVID times, many people are undergoing many mental health issues. What do you suggest to have better emotional health?
Jaseena Backer: It's a lot of anxiety due to uncertainty. Lockdown is a new experience for everyone. It is better to keep an open mind to accept any kind of change and challenge that comes by.
