Poetry is such a medium through which one can express their thoughts to the world. The society, politics, morals, childhood memories all were depicted beautifully by the poets of Bengaluru on May 5, 2019. The event was organized on one of the creative spaces known as Atta Galatta in Koramangala. This open mic poetry event welcomed all the poets in the city irrespective of gender, age, and language. The poets raised various spectrums of issues and perspectives through their work. The room witnessed swarms of poetry lovers from various nooks of Bangalore. Let’s know our city poets who left us spellbound during the event:
- Sanchita Shankar- She is the youngest poet in the room. Sanchita, a 14-year old writes poems, stories and plays. She recites poems that depicts the thoughts of a young mind. “I prefer to write using simple vocabulary so even non-readers can relate to my writings. I just love to talk. I’m always open to learning more and I can also give you a competitive debate experience”, she mentioned.
- Shivani Gowda- A 16-year-old aspiring writer and poet. Shivani believes that words can change the world and always strive to leave a social impact. She fell in love with poetry before she could even read. At the age of 3, she used to frame short rhymes about the world around her. “Over the years, this love for words has blossomed into a thirst for literature and a passion for writing which has taken me from Enid Blyton to my personal idol, Daphne du Maurier, and, from there, all over the world”, she told. When I was in the 4th grade, I received the immense honour of being felicitated by his Holiness, the Dalai Lama, for my poem on Tibet.
- Mariyam Saigal: One of the prolific poets in town is Ms. Saigal. Her poetry comes from an authentic place. It's raw and diverse. She is pursuing her Bachelor's Degree in Arts, works as a Content Writer for YourQuote. She was a performer at TEDx, WeTheWomen (festival conducted by Barkha Dutt), Spoken Fest, organized by Kommune, Inverse, Under25, The Habitat in Mumbai, 100 thousand poets for a change and Greenpeace. She has won and judged several poetry slam competitions. She went on a tour to Maharashtra's tier 2 and tier 3 cities to spread the culture of Spoken Word Poetry.
- Sauvik Acharjee: A young budding poet originally from Assam. He dabbles with magic and charms you with his purity. He is a cartomancer, poet and a passionate cook. He writes to ease his soul and casts spells through his poetry.
- Chandrama Deshmukh: “Poetry for me is that one streak of silver lining amidst the chaos of life. Being an avid reader, playwright and performer, I believe nothing touches
my soul the way poetry does”, Chandrama expressed. She is a writer by profession and a poet by passion. Chandrama has authored three books of poems. A storyteller of sorts, the moon is her muse. Moonlit Monochrome is her latest collection of English poems. She was recently awarded by The Karnataka Writers Association for her contribution to literature.
- Gaurav B Gothi: Gaurav has been writing poems since last 23 years and got published in various literary magazines and books such as Sahitya Akademi Journal, Vivarni, Nistabdh and Po'try. Apart from poetry, Gaurav loves playing Tabla and Keyboard, listening to music, reading books and photography. Gaurav is currently working as an IT professional in Bangalore.
- Shashikala Kalkar: Based out of Mumbai, Shashikala’s age couldn’t stop her to do what her heart wants to do. Being a senior citizen, Ms. Kalkar is often spotted in poetry and storytelling events.
- Ankush Tiwari: Dedication, Sincerity, Hard work and Amiability best describes him. He believes in spreading awareness to bring a change in our society and expresses that, "Awareness can cure almost everything in the world if we get it at the right time or at the initial phase of any trouble/disease". In recent times he is one of the most prominent young Hindustani performing artists in India who writes and passionately performs in Hindi blend with Urdu. He has performed/Hosted in almost 100 shows and judged many poetry competitions in colleges in various cities of India to date. Tiwari is a Poet/Writer, an Actor, an Activist, a Public Speaker as well as an Author of two books named "Khyalon ka Maikhana" and "Hadon ke paar bhi ek duniya hai" which are the anthologies consisting of 60+ Hindi Poetries and 100+ "Sher-o-Shayari".
- Smriti: “I love to listen and like to talk, poetry is the ground where my words go out for a walk. I believe poetry is the lifeline of my creativity and creativity, the lifeline of my life!” The people, their journey, conversations, experiences, stories inspire her to write and communicate with the world in ways she would have never had.
- Nalin Vyas: Vyas is a Hindustani poet. Growing up in Rajasthan, his poetry is a potpourri of influences; from the words of Ghalib, Gulzar and Faiz to the notes of the desert folk music. His poetry is often dark and raging. He also heads the artiste community of Open Sky Slam and is a stand up comic.
- Pradipta Roy Choudhury: Pradipta is an Associate Professor, Architecture in Acharya Institutes, Bangalore. Poetry is his favorite pastime. He also has authored a book The Transient Soliloquy.
- Abhishek Gupta: “I write to vent what's in my head, since I'm not so good in expressing myself in person. I write because it's therapeutic for It helps me heal, and keep my sanity intact”, Abhishek said.
- Pavitra Hegde: Pavitra has been greatly passionate about poetry. She has been writing since the age of 9. “What intrigue me is the way people perceive things around us and maybe this is what I portray in my poetry”.
- Sudhendu Chaturvedi: Sudhendu is an IT consultant born in Kanpur. Ever since he left the banks of Ganges and started traveling, his heart found its expression in poetry and this love affair continues.
- Faiz Akram: Faiz, an engineer by profession has been working towards his passion, nazm-nigar, a start-up which is born out of his passion. He is also a student of Urdu Literature and also participates at several Hindustani Poetry events.
- Ratnam Singh: Singh, a 27 year old Mechanical engineering graduate. Her inclination towards social service made her write about peace, love and progress of mankind. She works as a lyricist, writer and Editor with Art of Living. Ratnam also organizes meditation camps for slums.
