“The strongest action for a woman is to love herself, be herself and shine amongst those who never believed she could”. In our society, women are always looked down, treated as inferior to men. However, times have changed and women are seen breaking the glass shield and taking up the charge of their own life.
Lakshmi Sakkhi, a Bangalore based biker, and an entrepreneur came out of her comfort zone and is living life in her own terms. She worked in the corporate for almost 14 years in facilities and general administration before taking a break for almost 3 years. During her break, she gave a thought on her passion for traveling. That’s when she decided to turn her passion into profession.
It all started in the year 2016 when she started her own venture, Sakkhi. On being asked about her inspiration for travel, she shared of being a hardcore trekker. “I was a part of a non-profit organization and I used to organise treks. When the founding committee saw my skills for organising treks they approached me for doing some. I did organize many treks for women and once I started trekking, I took my bike along too.

I was quite intrigued to know about her family and the challenges she faced to come out to live her passion. She informed me that she came from an orthodox family and in fact, she herself dared to go out. “Once my daughter reached to a certain age when she could accompany me, I started going out. We have done 40 plus treks which include 1 day treks and Himalayan treks. I knew riding since my school days, whenever I see men riding bikes I feel crazy. My biking journey started when I joined a women bikers’ club in Bangalore. That’s when I bought an Avenger which is my best buddy today. I named it as ghost rider.”
“Through my venture, Sakkhi, I try to pull the women from their comfort zone and help them live their passion. We help women who are not confident and help them bring out through the clubs. It’s a kind of an open platform which can help them in various ways. Currently, I Have a team of 15 people”. Sakkhi has various groups- bikers group, travelers group, fitness groups, and entrepreneurs group. Through these groups, Lakshmi helps women who are alone and are in stress to find like-minded friends. “We have 300 women in our group, it’s a women’s club. People who are alone, who don’t have friends, we all meet once in a month. We meet, greet, and celebrate. We have an entrepreneur group, fitness groups (motivate each other through fitness) and riding club. We participate in biking events. I also want to start rides for non-gears. We also have a group that involves social activities”, Lakshmi shared.
In addition to traveling, Lakshmi also conducts events- small walkathons for women to create awareness on women safety. Initially, the event witnessed 50 people and later welcomed almost 1000 people in their next walkathon. They also did a saree walkathon to show that saree is not an obstacle to a fitness regime. They also did a bike rally women wearing sarees on November 1 to celebrate Karnataka Rajyotsabha. That’s when the biking club started.
Lakshmi continued making her own and fellow women’s life meaningful through conducting and participating in these events. They also started riding for various causes like Autism awareness, Blood donation, and many more. Sakkhi is looking to spread its wings in Chennai and Hyderabad too. We wish Sakkhi to reach many heights and transform the lives of many women across the globe.
