The Thar Desert The Thar Desert

Jaisalmer, the heart throb of the Great Indian Thar Desert beckons as it throbs with beauty, splendor, and adventure galore. Our travel from New Delhi is a comfortable one as the Howrah-Jaisalmer Express conveniently sets out at 10:40 and reaches the princely bastion by 23:20. There are beautiful places to visit in Jaisalmer in two days.

As the sun spreads its morning hues; we are ready to explore the rocky terrain and the desert sand that is scorched and barren. Yet, it is breathtakingly beautiful.  I set out like a seeker to find solace in its solitude. On Day 1 we visit the following.

  • THE GOLDEN FORT

The Sonar Qila also was known as the Golden Fort is the largest living fort in India. It is a towering monument that the desert beholds with pride. The Sonar Qila is made up of yellow sandstone and encompasses the museum, the palace, and the tower. The top tower gives a 360-degree view of the grandeur of Jaisalmer.

  • THE LODHVURA JAIN TEMPLE

The beauty of the Lodhvura Jain temple is unparalleled. The intricate designs, the Jharokhas and the out of the world Torana are a sight to behold. It is dedicated to the 24th Tirthankara Mahavira.  There are Jain temples inside the Jaisalmer Fort that also exhibit exquisite carvings. The stories and beliefs add interest and meaning to them.

  • PATWON KI HAVELI

The rich merchants built luxurious and massive houses called Havelis. They were constructed in the city and had close proximity to the fort and main bazaar. Patvon ki Haveli is the most popular and well maintained and offers a scintillating view of the Jaisalmer Fort.

  • GADISAR LAKE

The evening is well spent at the Gadisar Lake. It is extremely relaxing as the mood is uplifted with the melodious bhajans that are sung in nearby temples. Tourists, as well as locals, throng this place to enjoy this mesmerizing combination of natural beauty and soothing devotional music. I can see that the places to visit in Jaisalmer in two days will change me in more ways than one.

The star-studded sky above the desert lights up my soul.  I am excited for the Desert Safari on Day 2.  I go off to sleep listening to the sandy breeze that narrates the story of inhabitants and realise that the places to visit in Jaisalmer in two days helped me understand their way of life.
