A Holistic Way To Create Colour Harmony & Design In Your Homes

There is so much more to colours than meets the eye! Colours are therapeutic, and this form of healing has been used in many ancient world cultures. I am passionate about the science and art of colour, and the impact it has on our spaces and hearts.   In interiors, colours are not, and should not be just fashion or trend statements. They are tools which can enrich our lives at much deeper, psychological levels. They have the ability to create auras and enhance well-being.   Hence, the study and use of colours in a space is a serious exercise. It is both a scientific and artistic choice, based on various factors such as occupants’ personalities, the function of the room in question, cultural backgrounds and aesthetics- to name a few.   Here are some examples of how I have used colour and art to create suitable auras in interiors.   BananiVista, colour Bedroom   In this bedroom design, I have used greens and blues as the mood setter. These cool colours are calming, relaxing, and go a long way in making you unwind.  Scientific research has shown that certain colours suppress sleep whereas certain others promote deep sleep. Blue, green, and muted yellows are among the most conducive for sleep. Muted blues, primrose yellows and olive greens create an aura in which people can average almost 8 hours of sleep, whereas brown, gold, red and white bedrooms have managed to clock only an average of about six hours.  The subject of the art is abstract but is reminiscent of nature, plants and add to the effect of tranquillity.  Manipulating light to cast web-like shadows have the power to put one in a tranquil state. Flickering candles and lavender aroma promote sleep, and appropriate plants add more oxygen to the sleeping space.   BananiVista, colour Dining room   The dining room is about gratitude, bonding over food, and celebrating the abundance of the earth. The colours used here should be earthy, strong and of increased energy levels. Spicy oranges, citrus yellows, apple greens and tomato reds are known to increase appetite and aid digestion. These strong colours are stimulating, and the earthy hues are comforting and grounding.  In this dining room that I have designed, I created a painting with an earthy and sensual feel, and the subject is “ Mother Earth’s bounty”. The bright colours are picked off on the table mats and other accessories.   BananiVista, colour Living room   BananiVista, colour Another living room   The living room is a social space as well as a relaxation room for the family. It is here that visitors get their main impression of you. The art here should speak of you. It should define your personality, taste, background or your beliefs and philosophy about life. This room can have a balanced mix of warm and cool colors. It is like the “rainbow room”- joyous, positive, inviting and bright.  I have two examples for living rooms here. In the first one, earthy and forest hues are used to give an aura of wild nature and expansion to the living room. The subject of the art speaks of the resident’s religious beliefs and gives him a sense of comfort.   In the second example, the painting uses bright magentas, turquoises and oranges to depict a sensual painting of joyous dance. It is an attempt to capture the personality of the man of the house and is definitely a great conversation starter.    BananiVista, colours Yoga room   Spiritual and holistic activities such as yoga and meditation promote a sense of inner peace and alertness. Purple is a great colour to achieve this apparent contradiction. It is a combination of red and blue. Red is stimulating and energizing, while blue is calming and serene. Purple tends to have properties of both.  In this yoga and meditation room that I have designed, I have used the properties of purple and both its component colours. The same colour can be picked up in accessories like candles, flowers, rugs and cushions.    For more interesting content, follow us on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter.
